Schools and colleges

Schools, Colleges and Universities are some of our top fundraisers! There are so many ways you can get involved and help to raise funds and awareness for NAT...and it doesn't have to stop at World AIDS Day! See below for how other schools have used their creativity to raise vital funds for NAT and to raise awareness among pupils of HIV in the UK today...

How you can help

There are loads of ways your school or university can help us raise money. You could make us your charity of the year and hold a number of fundraising events. For ideas on what works click here.

Last year schools, colleges and universities all over the country took part in different fundraising activities - there were non-uniform days, fashion shows, concerts and many more!

Individuals also fundraise outside school and uni. In September, Tyrone Takirwa raised over £150 by taking part in a sponsored "stay awake". He was sponsored by friends and family to stay awake for twenty-four hours. Well done Tyrone!

Our top fundraising schools for World AIDS Day 2010 were Medina High School on the Isle of Wight and The International School of Aberdeen.  Both schools showed original creative flair with their fundraising ideas and managed to raise over £2,500 all together!

Fundraising initiatives like this make such a huge difference to us at NAT...why don't you put your creative hat on and see what you can come up with and how you can make a big impact to NAT's important work.

Medina High School, Isle of Wight
For World AIDS Day 2010 Medina High School went all out and had various activities taking place to raise vital funds for NAT and also to raise awareness of HIV in the UK.  Throughout the year the School Council organised concerts, drama performances and busking activities all in aid of NAT.  These events, along with money raised from their fantastic school production of RENT, managed to successfully raise £2,000 for NAT!  An incredible achievement of which all staff snd students involved should feel extremely proud...

Photos and stories to follow shortly - however in the meantime - a huge THANK YOU to all involved at Medina High Scool on The Isle of Wight - we are so grateful for your support and for the difference you have made to our WAD donations!

International School of Abderdeen
Recently The International School of Aberdeen had a World AIDS Day fundraising extravaganza, raising an amazing £1,500 all in aid of NAT!  Not only did they have lots of fun but they also managed to raise awareness of HIV and encouraging both pupils and teachers to ACT AWARE!
Many thanks to all the staff and pupils, especially the ISA AIDS Awareness Team!

World AIDS Day Fundraising at ISA:
Make it happen! That’s exactly what the International School of Aberdeen did to raise £1,500 for NAT at their recent HIV and AIDS Benefit Concert! The two-hour event showcased a wonderful array of student talent mixed with guest appearances by professional groups. Music ranged from rock to classic and pop to blues with a couple of stellar dance performances as well.

Throughout the concert, audience members were asked to test their knowledge and challenge personal assumptions about HIV by taking a ten-question quiz. An educational PowerPoint, created by two high school students and presented at the halfway point, informed the crowd and encouraged test takers. When an audience member scored 100% on the quiz, he/she received a sticker complete with a red ribbon and winning slogan exclaiming, “I scored 100%! I am aware!” This simple activity helped raise our “HIV IQ” and brought an educational element to the event as well.

What could make such a wonderful experience even better? FOOD! In the weeks leading up to the concert, the ISA cafeteria staff, students, teachers and parents baked, decorated and sold over 700 sugar cookies to the ISA community! Each heart-shaped treat was individually decorated with colourful frosting, candies and glitter. Ranging from the simple to absolutely glamorous, each cookie was sold for £1 to eager customers! One cookie, decorated by 7th grade English/Social Studies teacher Kasson Bratton, was 2cm high with an assortment of coloured frosting, candies and chocolates. It was then auctioned to the highest bidder, selling for £65!

The most important ingredient to the success of this event was the tangible community spirit built around our increased awareness of HIV and AIDS! In this magical moment the entire school community came together to challenge assumptions, learn more about HIV prevention, and support a worthwhile cause through music. Cookies, community, and rock n’ roll…what could be better?!
